Japanese Fish Prints (Gyotaku)
Saturday, June 13th, 10am to 5pm at Old Western Avenue. Fish prints (gyotaku) are a traditional Japanese art form, but you can try for yourself at The Spring Running. Great fun for kids of all ages. By applying paint to a fish such as an alewife, and then pressing it onto paper, you get a print that has really great detail, right down to the lines in the scales. Each print is an original work of art, and we'll have space available to dry and display your fish print.

The Alewife Harvesters of Maine
When the Edwards Dam came out in 2000, alewife stocks rebounded in the Kennebec, and given the other fish passage work in place, these fishes now have access to traditional waters; places they had been missing from since the 1860's, and the Lincoln presidency. Alewives are a key species linking the freshwater and marine resources of the state: as food for striped bass, largemouth bass and cod, as lobster bait, and as food for hungry people. The Alewife Harvesters of Maine will have smoked alewives available - a traditional treat that few have tried in recent times. These delicious fish will be available free (donations encouraged) at Old Fort Western, while the supply lasts. At the booth you can also learn about this historic fishery, the role of the alewife in river systems and the ocean, and about some of the current scientific work being conducted on this important fish. Smoked alewives are a Maine tradition - come taste them and you'll see why!

Fly-tying and Fly-casting Instruction
Great for the novice and the established fly fisherman alike, members of Trout Unlimited, Kennebec Valley Chapter will be set up and ready to help you with tying flies and improving your cast. This is a very popular part of the program at The Spring Running, and sure to be an attraction for the kids and the young at heart. We have plenty of space to lay out some line, and the KVTU group is fully equipped with an enclosed tent and lots of tying materials.

Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, Northeast Chapter
Look for the Northeast Chapter of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association stationed near the shore at the East side boat landing. There will be demonstrations of seat caning and paddle carving, and displays of restored, partially restored and un-restored canoes, together with a special display of a genuine Birchbark Canoe from the Penobscot Marine Museum. Ten to 15 canoes will be available, and some will be launched from the Old Fort Western boat launch, conditions permitting. Visitors are welcome to bring their old canoes for identification. Come see these beautiful canoes, pick up some useful skills, and talk to experts in canoe repair and building!

Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed
The Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed is a nationally recognized innovative non-profit environmental group providing education, outreach and programs that “Protect and Improve the 28 Lakes & Streams of the Cobbossee Watershed’, a 217 square-mile drainage basin located in the Kennebec Valley region of central Maine.

ROV in the Kennebec!
The OceansWide Program, and director Dr. Buzz Scott will be at the East Side Boat Launch, with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV is a mini-submarine, with a camera, lights and propulsion system, as used in oceanographic research, oil exploration, and other deep-sea applications. Drop by The Spring Running, as we hunt for sturgeon, striped bass and other fish in the Kennebec, and get a great view of what's under the water! Conditions permitting, kids can come and 'fly' the ROV, with the images shown on a flat-screen television on the shore. So, bring your young explorer, and come check out the high-tech world of ROV's!

Get on the Water with Seaspray Kayaking!
Seaspray Kayaking, of West Bath, will be on the waterfront at the East Side Boat Launch during The Spring Running, and will have all kinds of great paddling gear for demonstration, purchase and rental. Come dressed for action! Paddling gear, kayak fishing equipment, and boating expertise are all part of the package at Seaspray, and with the Kennebec River right at hand, you can really check things out. Also, come to see the new phenomenon of paddleboarding; all you'll need to know will be right there.
