About The Festival

"Once, the Kennebec River was home to virtually every species of migratory fish known in the Northeast. However, pollution, log drives and damming nearly killed off the shad, alewives and blueback herring (otherwise known as "river herring") that thronged the river along with a host of other fish. Now, regulation has curbed pollution, the log drives have stopped and the historic removal of the Edwards Dam in Augusta has taken place. The river is well on its way to renewal. And with that renewal have come the return of the river herring!
-The Spring Running Festival marks the return of the great herring runs to the Kennebec River- for the spring of 2006, and in anticipation of many more springs to come!"
