The 4th Annual Spring Running Riverfront Festival

DATE: Saturday, June 13th, 11am-9pm - Rain or Shine

The Spring Running is a celebration of life in, on and along the Kennebec River. The festival highlights and promotes the historic, cultural and economic connections of Augusta to the spring herring run and the Kennebec River. Visitors can expect many great booths and exhibits focusing on the natural resources of the Kennebec watershed, shopping opportunities with local artisans and craftsmen, information about sustainable and renewable energy, and of course great entertainment.

The annual Fort to Fort Canoe and Kayak Expedition is again part of The Spring Running, promising an excellent opportunity for an unforgettable on-the-water experience of the beautiful Kennebec. The Spring Running will run at Old Fort Western and the east side boat launch on Saturday, June 13th, from 11am-9pm, rain or shine. The Spring Running is a family-friendly event, for people who want to connect with a revitalized Kennebec River and have a good time doing it!

In addition, a presentation about the historic Kennebec River will be given at Le Calumet Club, as part of their Friday dinner series, on June 12th. Tickets are purchased separately for this dinner and presentation, through Le Club, at (207) 623-8211. Admission to The Spring Running is free, courtesy of our sponsors and organizers. Please take the time to thank them!

The festival will be held at Old Fort Western, and at the East Side Boat Launch, in downtown Augusta. Access and views of the river are excellent; Old Fort Western is the oldest surviving wooden fort in the United States. Ample space for parking and walking will allow many opportunities for visitors to experience hands on learning.

Our Vision/Mission:

A festival that celebrates and promotes the historic, cultural and economic connections of Augusta to the spring herring run. Our specific goals for the event:

1. To educate about the historical, cultural and economic role of the Kennebec rivers herring run in Augusta.
2. To include business, non profits and governmental support and collaboration.
3. To promote understanding of connection between a sustainable and healthy river, and sustainable and healthy communities.

About The Festival

"Once, the Kennebec River was home to virtually every species of migratory fish known in the Northeast. However, pollution, log drives and damming nearly killed off the shad, alewives and blueback herring (otherwise known as "river herring") that thronged the river along with a host of other fish. Now, regulation has curbed pollution, the log drives have stopped and the historic removal of the Edwards Dam in Augusta has taken place. The river is well on its way to renewal. And with that renewal have come the return of the river herring! -The Spring Running Festival marks the return of the great herring runs to the Kennebec River- for the spring of 2006, and in anticipation of many more springs to come!" - taken from "The Spring Running" brochure.
